Around 10:27 a.m. Saturday, a boater who landed at Waikini Beach north of South Point reported discovering human remains at a campsite.
Due to the remote location, police were flown to the campsite in a Fire Department helicopter. They found remains of what they believe is a male, 5-foot-9, with long brown hair. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Brown hiking shoes and socks were located at the campsite, along with a blue backpack and white plastic grocery bags filled with empty food cans and empty soft drink containers. Police found no evidence of foul play at the scene.
An autopsy conducted Monday also showed no evidence of foul play. The cause of death was undetermined.
Detectives believe the deceased may have died one or two weeks before being discovered. Police ask that anyone who knows of anyone missing who fits the description of the person found or who has information about a possible identity call Lt. Gerald Wike at 326-4646, ext. 266.
